Forming the Guard
Gents this is a condensed version of how we will set our guard at Before the Breakout (BTB) The first time you form up to go out will be accompanied by a formal inspection. We are going to treat these guards as two separate guards instead of one big guard.
1. First Call will be given- Form up your companies and move them to the reserve area. Form your privates in open ranks arms at the shoulder and bayonets fixed. Your corporals should be 5 paces to the rear of the rear rank, sergeants five paces to the rear of the corporals and the company commander 5 paces to the rear of the sergeants. The sergeant major will dress the ranks and count them off.
2. The adjutant will command Front. The officer will place himself 12 paces in front and center of the front rank. Sgts. in one rank 4 paces to his rear, corporals 4 paces to the rear of the sgts.
3. The adjutant will then assign the sgts and corporals their places in the guard.
4. The command will be Officer and non-commissioned oificer,s About –Face, inspect your guards-March! At this time your non-commissioned officers will take their place in line and the company officer will then inspect the men.
5. When you are finished inspecting your men you will take your place in line as if you were a company in a battalion in open order. (to the right of the front rank)
6. Adjutant will command Attention! Shoulder-Arms! Close Order-March
You will then be faced and marched to your post. The staff will take you out the first time to show you the post. It will be dark for the first two shifts and there will be no moon so we will move slowly. The paths to the front are very narrow and we will have them marked with some type of cloth because it will be very easy to get turned around. We will be moving in a single line most of the time and just need to make sure that we take our time and watch out for each other. We will unfix bayonets for safety reasons and leave them unfixed on the line at night.
After the first “formal” guard mount you will need to form up your companies in the reserve area in company formation. You will then march your company to their place in line.
Some things I am looking for from you while you are on line. We need a log of all activity your sentries report on their shifts. We need to know when they change their guard and the strength that can be detected. Also a sketch of the area that you are defending will be helpful to us as well.
